If I'm going to get something, I usually get it in spades - luck (both kinds), children, clutter, dirty laundry, bright ideas, daft ideas...

Protecting Your Home Against Costly Repairs

February 16, 2021 By Ellen Leave a Comment

Routine maintenance tasks may seem like a chore but could actually save you thousands in the long run by helping you avoid major damage and expensive repairs. Take a look at these top tips to help you effectively maintain your home and avoid forking out for costly repair work down the line.

Check Your Roof

You should aim to inspect your roof once every six months, looking for any loose tiles or signs of damage. A leaky roof can be devastating to your property, destroying furniture and compromising the structural integrity of your home. Preventing leaks with regular checks and minor repairs could save you a fortune in the long term.

Water Your Lawn

In the summer months it is vital that you water your lawn regularly. This will not only boost the aesthetic of your garden but could actually protect the foundations of your home. Once the soil surrounding your home dries out and shrinks this can cause the foundation to shift and become unstable as it moves into the empty space. Top piling companies advise that cracks and damage caused by shifting foundations can cause immense damage to properties yet can be avoided with simple care and maintenance.

Clean Out Gutters

It is important to remove any debris from the guttering and drainage system around your house. This is particularly important in autumn as the leaves begin to fall and can quickly clog your gutters and prevent water from being directed away from your home. A clogged gutter will cause water to run down the sides of your house, leading to leaks, damp or even foundation damage.

Insulate Pipes

Uninsulated pipes can cause havoc in winter as the water within the pipe can freeze, expand and eventually burst the pipe. Insulating exposed pipes before winter can prevent water damage by protecting pipes from bursting and can also reduce your energy bill by preventing unnecessary heat loss. Pipes which may require insulation are those which are exposed to the cold such as those in exterior walls, the loft or the garage.
