International Women’s Day
A genetic coin toss
heads you win
tails you’re a girl
sometimes it lands on its end or rolls under the sofa –
but that’s not a win, is it?
Girl side up (generally) you get
bosoms, the chance to have it all,
femininity – whatever that might be –
babies: the ones you want, the ones you don’t,
the ones they think you should be having,
menopause, as many pink things as you want
with extra bling, so pretty!
Votes, a set of mysterious rules,
equal opportunities in a world that’s unfair,
and a day a year to celebrate it all.
