So Father’s Day looms – Sunday, June 17 in case you care.
There is a school of thought that says it’s just commercial nonsense created by the greetings card and novelty sock industries.
It can feel a bit like that when every retail outlet starts to remind us about Daddy’s Day the minute the Easter bunny has hopped off.
However, apparently, that’s not the case. Sonora Smart Dodd, who lived in Spokane, Washington, invented it to honour her dad, civil war veteran William Smart.
William brought up six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth. Sonora felt father’s didn’t get enough credit so decided to do something about it.
The first Father’s Day was held in June 1910.
And, if you think about it, it’s only fair. If fathers have an equally important role in bringing up children, then they have equal dibs on breakfast in bed and hand-made cards. And pressies.
