Despite being a few months into the New Year, most people are still feeling the post Christmas pinch and are trying to make pennies go that little bit further. With such miserable weather and a tight budget it can be tempting just to stay in, keep warm and veg out. When you have a family, however, this can wear thin pretty quick, and active little minds need a bit more to keep them occupied. So instead of wallowing, why not pack a bag and head to London for an adventure to some of the capital’s free attractions? With great deals on London Travelodges you can make a real trip of it too, even on the post-Christmas shoestring! The Science Museum

The Science Museum in South Kensington is more than just a collection of artifacts in glass cases. It is an interactive treasure trove waiting to be explored by children and adults alike. Entry is completely free and you can easily sink a whole day or even more into this incredible facility. Kids as young as five can enjoy the Interactive Garden, discovering more about the world around them in all its multi-sensory glory. Older kids and parents will find plenty to excite here too, and you won’t leave without learning a thing or two.
Tate Britain

Getting kids into art from an early age will hold them in good stead for appreciating the finer things in life as adults, and knowing their Van Gogh from their Picasso will help them at school too. The Tate Britain is home to works by Constable, Turner and Blake, and is a great starting point for any artistic education. There is no admission fee, and you are free to spend as much time as you like in the gallery, so follow the Tate Britain’s own advice about visiting with kids and explain art on a level they’ll understand. Natural History Museum
If you like dinosaurs or animals, or are curious to learn more about evolution and the history of life as we know it, then the Natural History Museum has to be on your hit list on a trip to London. There are animals of every shape and size, from the enormous Blue Whale, to the tiniest of creepy crawlies, along with the story of how these vastly different creatures are probably related in some way. Learn about natural marvels such as volcanoes and earthquakes as well as viewing some of the treasures the earth has to offer like diamonds and sapphires. No visit here would be complete of course without a visit to the dinosaur exhibit and the iconic diplodocus skeleton in the great hall. These are just a few of the many fab free activities and experiences in the UK’s capital, so you can have great, educational and fun days out with the kids without breaking the bank. Pick a few of your favourites and build a packed itinerary without worrying about ticket prices or running out of things to do. You’ll find a few days simply isn’t enough to see it all and will be planning a return trip very soon!
