In defence of Donald Trump (sort of)

December 15, 2015 By Ellen

Got you. Of course, I’m not supporting anything the nylon-haired loon says. He’s loathsome. Bigoted, sexist, homophobic and probably nasty to animals too. No redeeming features.

I am, however, supporting his right to voice his (cretinous) opinions. And to do it in this country where, if he oversteps the mark, there is legislation.

We’re not going to throw down the welcome mat, but we can’t ban people on the basis of their views. One of his offensive opinions is that he wants to ban people because of what they believe – in response we should, erm, ban him. How does that work?

It doesn’t. Banning him makes us exactly the same as him.

But more than half a million folk have signed a petition demanding that he be turned away at the ports. Good grief – that’s a lot of people who think that we shouldn’t allow someone in because we don’t like what they say.

I’ve been astonished to see the petition gathering pace – like an avalanche. Rolling on as, it seems, more and more people don’t stop to think before putting their digital mark to the thing. Nodding idiotically, they are signing up like dummies because they think it’s the right thing to do. “Oh yes, let’s stop that nasty Trump chap with his narrow-minded and foolish ways.”

Don’t you see? Signing the thing makes you look like silly sheep. Half a million silly sheep. Whatever happened to ‘I don’t agree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it’?  It’s part of the point of living in a free country.

Imagine if we banned everyone we disagreed with, or who was bigoted, sexist, homophobic, racist or otherwise wrong-headed.  Come to think of it…

Here here. Although if he becomes American president, can be ban Cameron from interacting with him?
