In a bun dance

If I'm going to get something, I usually get it in spades - luck (both kinds), children, clutter, dirty laundry, bright ideas, daft ideas...

A holiday less average… Secrets of the typical Brit abroad

July 13, 2016 By Ellen

Auto Europe Blogger IGNot quite a week and already the tan is fading faster than the sand fly bites.

We’ve passed through the usual back-to-normal phases:

  • Good grief it’s great to be home
  • I’m on top of the world and I can do anything. I’m rested, watch me roar.
  • How can there possibly be so much laundry?
  • Gradual reacquaintance with to-do list
  • I can’t remember any passwords for anything.
  • Groan – work tomorrow.
  • Reality bites

And it’s just about settled down to a wonderful memory of a fabulous time in Gozo.

I was interested to see that Auto Europe has carried out a survey to discover what the typical holiday looks like and how far we are from ‘average’.

Apparently normal folk spend three hours a day sunbathing. I’m torn about this one – on the one hand, that much uninterrupted time would be wonderful, but I’m sure I’d get bored of the inactivity long before three hours was up.

Typically ‘we’ read two and a half books during the holidays. I suppose I did exactly that if you consider that I abandoned Victoria Hislop’s The Thread half way through, wrung out by all that dull and worthiness.

I did enjoy Karin Slaughter’s Pretty Girls for its creepiness and Nina Stibbe’s Man At The Helm for the sharp observations and opportunity to revisit a 1970s childhood.

Normal folk knock back 56 alcoholic drinks on holiday – clearly, I must try harder, but I did discover a troubling taste for Blue Nun.

They also get lost three times. We would like to claim a record for the most frequent navigation errors on so small an island. Three times a trip was our average.

My average holiday also features:

  • One hat bought due to forgetting what a poor hat wearer I am.
  • Three games played – this year Bananagrams, Monopoly Cards and Cards Against Humanity.
  • Ratio of packed to worn garments 3:1

Are you a typical Brit abroad?
