Have you ever had a Wednesday that was doing its best to impersonate a Friday in all regards, except that there are still two full actual days to go until the weekend?
That’s today, that is.
Though while the weekend is a lovely place to be it does mean that the holidays are very nearly over.
Three Boys go back to education on Monday – and they may or may not be fully kitted in new stuff and sporting neat haircuts. It may well be that we’ll have to settle for washed at best.
Mixed feelings then. Routine and business are definitely good for us all but the start of this term always feel like the inexorable slither to winter and Christmas again.
Boy One is going into the sixth year. This time next year he’ll be done – left school and (fingers crossed) ready to head to university.
Cue boring parent refrain – how can it be, it’s too soon, my baby waaaah. Etc. Although actually his first days at school feel like a very long time ago for me too.
He and his brothers aren’t the only ones going to learn something this term. School of life is not enough. I’m starting a part-time MLitt in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow next month. Gulp. Or at least I will be if I can defeat the online registration system. It seems you need more than a degree to work it.
At the moment even the reading list is intimidating me. I am intending to blog as I go if you’re interested.
And in what must be the way of these things, I no longer have any idea what I’m going to be creative about. Before I had a place on the course I had huuuuge lists of ideas for books that would knock the socks of Richard & Judy and Amazon and Kindle and anyone else. Only now, obviously, I can’t think of a damn thing.
Suggestions on the back of a gin bottle, please…
UPDATES: This post was actually drafted on a Tuesday, which shows how much of a week it’s been.
Boy One opened his magic envelope and we all high fived – only I’m not allowed to blog about his results, he said.

How exciting! Best of luck to you! And well done, Boy One.
(I can explain the vending machine but it might take all the fun out of you telling your story…?)

What is the answer to the vending machine? Please tell me, it’s puzzled me for years.
