March already and I’m still picking pine needles from between the floorboards.
Best thing to do for World Book Day?
… buy a book and read it
It’s World Book Day today and all over the country parents are tearing their hair out at the unreasonable costume demands this causes.
Mercifully, the head teacher at Boy Three’s school sees the wisdom in encouraging children to read books by, erm, reading books not by dressing up as them.
It would be a bit like encouraging healthy eating by getting kitted out like a floret of broccoli.

The write time
I’m still plodding on with my writing course… and loving it. The reason I say ‘plodding’ is that I’ve got loads of ideas, few of which make it off the drawing board.
It’s about carving out the time to write which requires the selfish act of putting writing as a top priority.
Suggestions for fitting writing time into a busy life most welcome, please. Meantime, I’ve bought a copy of The Artist’s Way, which I’ll read when I’ve got time.

This week I…
saw La La land
On the plus side: It’s great fun and very beautiful. The end avoids the cliched ‘girl’s crappy life is redeemed by the love of a good man’ ending. Instead, we get a ‘girl can be a huge success but at the expense of the love of a good man’ ending. Oh dear.
On the minus side: It’s a bit long.
Left me: Googling articles about the other film references in La La Land (I spotted about half)
read On Writing by Stephen King
Plus: Don’t worry too much about symbolism, language and, even, plot.
Minus: It appears that a supportive wife would be handy.
Left me: Inspired to submit more writing for publication.
ate pancakes
Plus: The kids like them and I’m quite good at making them (don’t tell the Panther)
Minus: It makes a bit of a mess of the kitchen.
Left me: quite glad it’s only once a year.
The week’s hang ‘on a minute’ moment came courtesy of Boys One and Three.
Boy Three thrust a note into my hand. “I’m on mute,” it said.
After a charades conversation, I figured out that the mute button is on the right-hand side of Boy Three’s head.
But that wasn’t the end of it, because his volume was up far too loud. So he had to be muted again immediately.
Eventually, I established that the volume control is between crown and nape. Phew.
Then Boy One got in on the act and muted the boy again. I had to unmute him. Then he did it again.
And again.
Mute, unmute went on for a tedious amount of time until I heard myself saying.
“Boy One, please would you stop muting your little brother.”
