You know the feeling – spirits that hit the floor as soon as you get your suitcase over the threshold after a wonderful holiday. We’re just back from two weeks of all-inclusive indulgence and so the sight of the untidy and cluttered house we returned to has been slightly depressing.
I think I’d love to live permanently with sweeping marble halls, mood lighting and constant fluffy towels. Imagine how wonderful to have water features that someone else looked after, groomed gardens and comfortable swings and beanbags strategically placed for a breathtaking view. Sigh.
Take heart. It is possible to get that vaycay (as the young people say) feeling all year round – or at least till the clutter builds up again and the tan fades. Stop moaning about how miserable it is to be back and take action to recapture the sunny warmth.
Tidy up. Yup. Part of the reason the resort was so lovely was that it didn’t have piles of unfinished projects and other people’s rubbish lying about. Get serious about storage and put that mess away. See, it’s better already.
Sit down. Part of the fabulousness of your break was the ability to park your backside wherever you like and just watch the world go by, or nap, or whatever. Comfy perches are the key to this. Find at least one and don’t put laundry on it. It’s a sacred space.
Lighten up… or down. Lamps, lanterns and other forms of soft illumination are the key here. Have a browse until you find something that takes you back to the soft moonlight and the Mediterranean breezes. Here’s a great selection of lamps.
It’s marble-ous. I loved the cool sweeping acres of marble in the hotel entrance. Very classy. So it’s a good idea to include a little of the shiny stuff in your décor plans. You could always use some strategically placed plants in marble vases to get the effect.
Fluffy stuff. Oh, the spa! Piles and piles of fluffy towels and the scent of massage oils. Delicious. It’s even better because someone else has washed and folded the towels so you don’t have to. Even if that last bit isn’t possible at home, you can aim for an oasis with new towels from Lionshome, and stock up on some touches of luxury for your smallest room. Even if the rest of your house is a tip, you can shut yourself in there with a scented candle and relax…. For a while.
Take off. Of course, the only cure for the post-holiday blues is to book yourself the next getaway. Get a notebook and start planning. Pick a destination – or two – and some activities. You might want to do something completely different next year, or simply more of the same. Try to plan a short break in a couple of weeks something to look forward to, otherwise, it will seem like next summer is considerably more than a year away.
