In a bun dance

If I'm going to get something, I usually get it in spades - luck (both kinds), children, clutter, dirty laundry, bright ideas, daft ideas...

Where was the last place you had it?

December 20, 2019 By Ellen

That, along with ‘just tidy up and you’ll find it’ or ‘retrace your steps’, are what my children hear every time they mournfully tell me that they’ve lost something or, worse, that ‘it’s gone…’.

Apparently, among the many other things that mothers are supposed to be is the role of Finder, Rememberer and Keeper, particularly of other people’s possessions. Nope, I don’t remember that one in the job description either.

So it’s uncomfortable to notice that I have been extraordinarily careless with my own belongings, including, but not limited to, my sense of purpose, creative impulse and, occasionally, humour. Meh! But don’t worry, I’m not teetering on the brink of (another) existential ramble, instead, I’ve got a plan.

Lately, I have struggled to blog – my usual fodder of trivia and whimsy has felt too flimsy, even for me. Perhaps because the stretch towards the Big Questions has left me weary or something. (Or perhaps it’s just the metaphors that are tired) Whatever.

Now, instead of gathering a collection of opening paragraphs, I’m launching on a challenge. A blog post a day, regardless of quality (you lucky people!) in the hope that just by doing it, I’ll find what’s missing in the place I had it last. I’m going to keep this up for a month which will take us right into the soggy heartlands of the failed New Year resolutions by which time I will be fixed, found and on my way. Of course, I will.

Be more Nessa

Because we may well watch the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special this year. I decided it would be a good idea to introduce Boy Three to the concept by going back to the start of series one. 2007! Who knew it was such a long time ago – back when people smoked in pubs and phones had flippy lids.

I’d forgotten what joy Nessa is – she’s magnificent, with her judgement, honesty and confidence. And her wisdom. Today, if asked ‘What’s occurring?’, the answer will be ‘being more like Nessa’.
