February is one of the grayest months of the year. The weather is dark, cold, windy and snowy. Isn’t it tempting to think that you won’t go anywhere and you will stay under a blanket, specially if you pulled-up your Gentleweight blanket? This is something very understandable. Guides have a list of where to go in February for those who don’t want to be a “prisoner” of their sofa.
What can you do in February?
First of all, there are winter sports and recreational activities, and February is the last month of winter, when snow is everywhere. Despite the unpredictable and ever-changing weather, if you get yourself a pair of great snowshoes, you should venture out on a customized ski trip. Ski in the woods, take a snowmobile ride, windsurf on frozen lakes and reservoirs or learn to drive a dogsled.
Not into sports, but want to experience a true winter fairy tale? Well, pick a good day and go to the Golden Ring city or Sochi for two days. Get away from the distractions of the big city and change the environment in the historical capital. Here, the cold winter and the surrounding snow look extraordinary.
February is also a good month for vacations in such cities as Kazan, Novosibirsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Veliky Novgorod and St. Petersburg. These cities are full of historical museums, modern galleries, hotels and art events. In good weather we often rub shoulders with other visitors, all eager to spend limited good days outdoors, to walk, to admire buildings or nature. But in the cold and obscure month of February, in metropolises less suitable for street walks, this time of the year is just right to visit the cultural attractions.
If you are completely bored with winter, then you can go to the south. On the banks of the Black River, in the Crimea and Krasnodar Krai, you will be find quite comfortable weather with a temperature of about +10 degrees. There you can admire the beautiful winter seas, take off your dowdy down jackets and heavy winter shoes and put on nice coats and comfortable shoes. Go for a walk and recuperate.
If you don’t want to travel far, you can find a luxurious hotel like Flagstaff hotels in the countryside near the city you’re staying in. Usually, these hotels are overcrowded in the summer and during the New Year holidays. But in February, the discounts are huge. Choose a hotel with a sauna, spa and very nice surroundings to stay. Of course, you can also enjoy other services such as horseback riding, listening to Russian cooking master classes, or taking a balloon flight. All of these need to be booked well in advance. Get organised and you’ll find that your winter visit is packed with pleasure.
It is worth mentioning that Orthodox believers who observe the customs of the Great Fast (in 2021 it is from February 19) can make pilgrimages to solemn churches, or to find discover another place rich in history where they can pray.
