In a bun dance

If I'm going to get something, I usually get it in spades - luck (both kinds), children, clutter, dirty laundry, bright ideas, daft ideas...

Helping your child choose their A Level subjects

November 2, 2021 By Ellen

College is an important part of a child’s life. It’s here that they will find new friends and discover who they really are. What your child studies at college will lay the foundations for whatever they go on to do next. Whether that be a high-flying apprenticeship or a studious university course. To help your child make the most of their time at college, we have joined a private school in Cardiff to share advice on how to help your child choose their A levels.

University Entry Requirements

For your child to secure a place on their chosen degree course, it’s important to select the right subjects to study at A level and achieve the grades required. To do this, you can use a university prospectus or UCAS to compare the entry requirements of different universities.

Get Advice from a Teacher

Before selecting a course, it might be worthwhile to speak to your child’s subject teachers to see whether or not they can make the transition. This can help your child to make realistic expectations and help with the decision-making process.

Research Career Paths and Employment Sectors

No one certainly has the 5-year plan at the age of 17 or 18 but having a look into potential jobs of interest can help your child to start thinking about the career they wish to pursue. This can be helpful as many competitive graduate programmes also often require specific A Level grades as do apprenticeships and many other jobs.

Check Out Course Content

Of course, think about the short term too. By looking at what a course involves, your child can determine whether or not it’s for them. This can be done by looking at the resources made available by exam boards and a college or sixth form prospectus.
