In a bun dance

If I'm going to get something, I usually get it in spades - luck (both kinds), children, clutter, dirty laundry, bright ideas, daft ideas...

Helping your child transition from nursery to ‘big school’

November 2, 2021 By Ellen

With moving to a “big school” comes a lot of changes. More opportunities to learn how to become independent and longer days for some. As with any change, this transition can be daunting too. We have partnered with a private nursery in Islington to share advice on how to help your child transition from nursery.

Children’s Story Books for Starting School

Listening to stories of how characters bravely overcome their fears and mark on their adventures can help children starting pre school to feel less anxious about the move. A few good books that you can find in your local bookstore are Topsy and Tim: Start School, Mr. Men Little Miss go to School and When a Dragon Goes to School.

Potty Training

Being potty trained before starting school can help your child to be more confident and independent at school. You can use books to demonstrate this and teach your child how to wipe correctly. Training is always better to do after meals, that way you can run through this together when your child’s ready.

Rehearse Their First Day

As they say, practice makes perfect and can help your child get used to what they might be expected to do at school. You can pretend to be the teacher for this or use your child’s toys to put on a show together of what school is like. Activities that you could rehearse are going to the toilet, getting changed for PE and collecting belongings at the end of the day.

Talk About All the Fun That There Is to Have

Just like their move to nursery, big school is another new adventure and an opportunity for your child to make lots of new friends. You can boost your child’s confidence by using positive framing and reminding them of this.
