Inside it’s warm and the kids are singing, noisy and excited by their evening’s fun. School tomorrow and there’s gossip. Outside is all rain and dark and lorries making dirty spray clouds. The lights fracture through the windscreen spreading as I fumble with wiper speed and demist. “Play my song now.” Music is loud and we zoom towards home. Cosy fug inside, whooshing past vast trucks outside, hunting for junction signs in the wet. Lorries cartoonish with red light circumferences. I keep inside and outside apart and we make it, this time.
