Succession
This week a man gets a new hat,
or rather it’s a very old hat
and it’s made of metal and stones
not knitted for comfort or warmth
and it won’t keep the sun off,
but it is the hat he was born to wear
a destiny hat, if you like.
One day perhaps, squirming children in a history class,
will learn about
Charles III of the United Kingdom
in the same lesson they learn about
other things that are no longer relevant
such as blackboards, fax machines,
a fixed mindset, malnutrition,
preventable disease, racism, fossil fuels,
and the patriarchy.
