Trigger warning – pregnancy loss
One in four
You never forget
the first drop of blood,
a sickening stillness –
the knowing
the not knowing
You never forget
what happened next,
recalibrating a future –
the telling
the not telling
You never forget
the inadequacy of ‘I’m sorry’,
the hurt of turned away gazes,
the ‘never mind: just try again’
the shame of wild emotions
You never forget
realising it’s a relief,
other people’s discomfort –
the silent birthdays marked
the ghost child beside you
You never forget
every whispered ‘me too’
the club you didn’t want to join
the trauma and sorrow
the army of ghost children
