Carry on
The ogres you fought and
mountain you defeated
cast shadows where you tread.
Dark shadows, inky with menace,
phantoms lurk and all you can see
are glinting fangs.
You stumble in the gloom
fearful, consider sitting on a rock
and watching while life
skitters onwards
See, beyond the shadows
where the sun warms your path
and hopeful ferns unfurl again.
That’s where you’re headed.
Beasts of the gloom may
snarl and snap as you go
You must show them your skip and your leap
even though your fearful heart
sobs for shelter –
there’s a warm meadow
waiting for you
