Priorities
Will the world be better with my poem in it?
We won’t find out
if I hang out the laundry first,
or answer emails
and scroll some internet fluff.
The world may not care what I write
about varifocals or politicians or heatwaves,
but it won’t get the chance to judge
if I answer the phone, go shopping
and rearrange my crockery.
When my small world delivers a few lines
few notice, but I am changed by
a feeling or a thought that got caught
and held up to the sun, for a while.
The dishes will still be there.
