How To Transform A Dim Room Into A Bright Welcoming Space

You can transform a dim room into something bright and airy with some simple changes that won’t break the bank. Just one will help a home feel brighter, but together you have something much more welcoming. From mirrors to open space, here are some handy suggestions.

The Power of the Sun

Lighting plays a key role in getting the atmosphere of a room just right. But there is one light source that never disappoints. The sun provides free, clean and bright light all day. With something like rooflights or a new window installation, you can use the sun to brighten up a space. There are other benefits too. The UV rays from the sun are actually antibacterial, so sunlight is excellent for kitchens and bathrooms, and the heat can cut the costs of energy bills.

Mirrors, Mirrors, and More Mirrors

Mirrors are an interior designer’s best friend when trying to make a space look and feel bigger. Mirrors reflect the room, and the brain can think the space is larger as a result. However, they also reflect light. This means that mirrors can increase the ambient light in a space significantly. Mirrors work especially well when used in small spaces like hallways and bedrooms. However, there’s no reason you can’t use them anywhere, as they always add a nice decorative touch.

Transform a Dim Room with Fresh Paint

Most people decorate every 3 to 5 years, and perhaps you are coming up to your next decoration plan. One of the simplest ways to stop your home feeling like a fishbowl is to brighten up a room is with a fresh coat of paint. Neutrals like creams, beiges and whites can bounce light around the room for brightness and a feeling of more space. Combined with mirrors placed in certain spots for light, you can trick the brain into thinking the space is larger.

Open Up the Available Space

One of the more expensive but transformative methods to brighten up a space is to open it up. If the structure can handle it, an open-plan conversion can flood a space with light. Today, it is popular to open up the back of a home with a combined living, dining and food preparation space. Combined with features such as folding glass doors and skylights, your home becomes a haven of light and sunshine. However, this transformation is on the more expensive side.

Dress the Windows Properly

Window dressing is often overlooked but can play an important role when brightening up a room. If you have heavy curtains or thick blinds in a small space, they will block most of the light. It can help to replace these with lighter and brighter fabrics such as cotton or voile. How to dress the windows is also crucial. For example, more light can come into the space with curtains that extend all the way to the end of the pole, and keep the windowsill clutter to a minimum.

Summary

The sun is probably the best addition you have to transform a dim room into a brighter and more inviting space. Sunlight can be bounced around a smaller space with mirrors. However, it also helps to dress any windows properly to ensure you get the maximum amount of sunlight.
