In a bun dance

If I'm going to get something, I usually get it in spades - luck (both kinds), children, clutter, dirty laundry, bright ideas, daft ideas...

Rainy Day Blues: Activities for Kids When Outdoor Activities Are Ruined

When the weather turns bleak and kids get stuck indoors, it can be frustrating for them – and any adults present. Yet, families can chase away rainy day blues with fun indoor activities that help kids forget about the nasty weather. By keeping the following activities in mind, you’ll be prepared the next time the weather prevents the kids from playing outside.

Colouring

Colouring is a fun activity that most kids enjoy. Moreover, it’s generally no problem to keep a supply of crayons and colored pencils on hand so kids have what they need to create their works of art. Colouring can take kids’ minds off the bad weather and help them to relax while enjoying some arts and crafts fun.

Indoor Campground

If the weather ruins your kids’ plans for building an outdoor fort, help them create an indoor camp complete with a blanket fort, sleeping bags, and even a picnic lunch. Kids can relax at camp while colouring or leaning back on pillows to watch a movie. If you have a small tent you can set up, that’s even better as far as the kids are concerned!

Film and Thematic Lunch

Cuddling up on the sofa to watch a cute film is a fun way to spend time together indoors. Yet, you can ramp up the fun by serving a lunch that can enhance the movie-watching experience. For example, if you’re watching Disney’s Lady and the Tramp, there’s no other lunch option that’s better than spaghetti. Fish fingers might not be so ideal when watching Finding Nemo, but you get the idea!

Dance Party

Break out a disco ball and some lively tunes and host a dance party right in your own living room. Dancing is fun but also a terrific way for kids to burn off some energy. You can even pull up some YouTube videos that feature instructions for different dance moves and types of dances. You might want to keep your own video camera on hand to capture the fun and those special memory-making moments.

Read a Classic

Great books are made for rainy days. To take kids’ minds off the thunder and lightning, grab a special book from the shelf and read together. Share one of your own favourite kids’ classics with the kids or ask them to choose a tale they’ve never read before. After reading a few chapters or picture books together, have the kids write their own story with accompanying artwork.

Paint

If you can stand the mess, pull out the paint sets and let the kids practice their brushstrokes. Of course, why confine their painting to a piece of paper? Maybe you need basement walls painted or a piece of old furniture. Kids can help you paint any item that needs a makeover – and they’ll love doing it.

Rainy days don’t have to make your household blue. Keep these ideas in mind so you can create meaningful memories with your kids.
